  1. Stay Mentally Active “ The brain is like a muscle – if you don’t give it regular workouts, its functions will decline (Better Health). Whether it’s taking continuing education classes at a local college, picking up a new hobby, reading a good book, or even doing the daily crossword puzzle, it’s important to continually challenge yourself and exercise your mind as you get older. Not only with it help you stay sharp, but you’ll enjoy the daily intellectual stimulation that can take away from the monotony of day-to-day responsibilities.
  2. Get Medical Checkups Regularly “ Even if you feel fine, it is important to visit your primary care physician on a regular basis in order to make sure your body is in good condition. Not all medical problems have visible symptoms, which is why it is important to take precautionary measures in order to insure that your body continues to work like it is supposed to in your later years.
  3. Protect Your Body “ As you get older it is important to take extra precautions to protect your body. Be sure to fix, or have someone help you fix, broken things around the house (i.e. broken chair, loose floor board, uneven step, etc.) Also, it is important to not overexpose your body to either extremity in temperature “ hot or cold. When you’re outside in the sun, wear sunscreen and a hat and make sure you don’t allow your body to overheat leading to a heat stroke.  When you go out in the cold, dress appropriately to keep your body warm.
  4. Maintain a Positive AttitudeUS News reports that happier people live longer, healthier, and stronger lives. Especially after children leave the house, or when you reach the age of retirement and your work responsibilities are over, it’s important to find things to do that make you happy. Seek out volunteer opportunities
  5. Maintain Close Relationships with Family and Friends “ Getting older isn’t always easy, so it is important to keep in touch with family and friends in order to get the support and help you may need with certain responsibilities. It’s also nice to have a group of individuals that you can turn to when you need a laugh, a friend, or even a hug.
