smiling woman, how to stay happy this winter

Don’t let the winter blues get you down this year. Follow these simple guidelines for a happier, healthier winter:

  1. Eat Right “ What you eat has a huge impact on your mind and body. During the winter months, it is especially important to fuel your body with the proper nutrients it needs to stay healthy. Avoid refined and processed foods, as these are foods that contribute little or no nutritional value and can zap your body of energy once your body has processed them.
  2. Sleep Well “ We all know how important sleep is for maintaining a energy and a positive attitude. Studies have shown that consistent sleeping patterns decrease irritability and improve coping abilities, so you’ll be able to better find joy during the cold winter months.
  3. Get Moving “ Find something physical you love to do outside in the cold. Whether it’s skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, or even just taking a walk, exercise releases endorphins that positively affect your mood.
  4. Soak up the Sun “ Bundling up and getting outside during the winter months can significantly improve your mood.  According to an article in US News, “Natural sun can do wonders for depression, so get out of the office or the house as much as possible during the daylight hours.
  5. Treat yourself “ Having something to look forward to each week can have a significant impact on our mood. Treat yourself to something special “ whether it be a pedicure, lunch with a friend, or curling up with a book and a mug of hot chocolate “ your body will thank you!
  6. Simplify “ With the winter months also comes a host of holidays that can often become a source of stress. Don’t allow these holidays to overtake your day-to-day routine. Simplify your tasks each day, make a list of what needs to get done, and check the items off one by one.
